Can Social Networking or Web 2.0 Tools Help in Standards Development?

ProductNEXT_Team

Many standards working groups already use online tools like wikis in the development of new standards drafts. What tools should we use next, and which ones aren't we using enough yet?

For example, would being present on social networking sites like Facebook, LinkedIn and Plaxo help to attract greater participation in working groups? Which online tools that would help us meet and develop standards more efficiently? Would you follow an IEEE-SA working group feed on Twitter? Would you discover and use standards more if they were linked to in Digg or Reddit?

Let us know -- we want to hear from you!

Meanwhile, you can follow IEEE-SA on Twitter or join the official IEEE-SA Group on Facebook. See you there!

No, I don't think a large presence on general social networking sites will increase standards participation and awareness.

Increase awareness in the technical community by encouraging technical people to clip / link / digg the various references to standards topics of interest.

Then create a community for focused discussion and work in developing and reviewing standards.  Reviewing requires not only a copy of the existing draft or standard to be reviewed, but also additional information and materials:

  - criteria and objectives

  - style guides

  - normative and referenced documents

Make all of these important pieces available in the reviewing / collaboration environment.

Finally promote some sort of system of recognition or "credibility rating".  This will a) serve as a professional incentive for participants to really work and contribute while keeping in mind the viewpoint of others; and b) allow the standards organization to more readily process and organize the intellectual work (relying upon these knowledgeable and respected contributors).

I strongly believe that utilizing Web 2.0 resources will assist in the development of standards and standards participation.  It does not necessarily require the use of such popular services such as LinkedIn, Facebook, etc. but may also be a direct community within IEEE proper.

Awareness of IEEE standards should continue to be made in the popular Web 2.0 arena both to attract the attention of members/potential members but to also get the younger generation interested in the idea of standards development.

As the IEEE DEIS Web Editor-in-Chief, we are both working on the development of the IEEE DEIS Web (http://www.ieee.org/go/deis) as a Web 2.0 resource, linking to other Web 2.0 resources such as Wikipedia and strongly using Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and others to generate traffic and interest in our society.

I have been actively participating in IEEE SAs use of Web 2.0 and wish to state: keep up the good work!  This is how we are going to reach the members of tomorrow!Cool
